The second in the new series of reference sets from Salem Press (the first, Great Athletes , is reviewed in the June 1992 Reference and Research Book News ), Great Events offers a comprehensive overview of its topic in a format that combines text and photographs to present subject matter that is both inviting to the eye and engaging to readers from the middle-school level up. It offers 472 articles, arranged in chronological order from 1900 to 1992, covering major turning points in the history of international events: wars and other military conflicts, economics, landmark legislation in civil rights and social reform, the trend toward independent nations and ethnicities, and other major developments in international relations. Each article begins with a headline-title announcing the event (e.g. "Indira Gandhi Is Assassinated"), followed by a brief sentence-description, a list of vital data, and a three-part text (detailing the event itself, its background, and its long-range impact). Accompanying the text is a related photograph. The five indexes (chronological, alphabetical key word, category, personages, and geographical) appear in each volume.
